Installing Microsoft Windows Vista/ Windows 7 using a USB Flash Drive

Installing OS (windows vista / windows 7) using USB Flash Drive directly to your computer is much faster than boot it using DVD especially to those people who are using  laptop notebooks. The added access and transfer speed of a  flash drive makes it the preferred method when installing a fresh copy of Windows.

Things You'll Need:

  • Computers
  • Laptops
  • USB 2.0 4GB Thumb Drive
  • Microsoft Windows Vista
  • Windows7
  • WinRAR

Instructions

  • Step 1
First, you will need to have a high-speed USB 2.0 flash drive with a  storage space of 4GB. These useful devices are cheap now a days and can be bought at your local electronic store.

  • Step 2
You need to prepare the USB flash drive to save your Windows OS installation files. Click on the Start tab and type "cmd" in the Run field box and hit enter. When the command prompt window opens up type "diskpart" and a new disk part window will pop up. (see image on step 3).

  • Step 3
DiskPart Steps

DiskPart Steps
Type the following commands into the new disk part window:
"list disk" - This command will list all the disk drives currently attached to your computer.
(Find the number of the USB drive you will be using to install the copy of your windows installation disk to and write it down.)

Type "select disk #" replacing the # symbol with the correct disk number you jot down earlier.
When the correct disk has been selected type:
"Clean" - this will wipe the drive of any stored files etc...
"Create partition primary" - This will make the drive a primary partition.
"Select primary partition" - self explanatory

Now type "active"

Then "format fs=fat32 quick" - This will wipe your new partition.
Then type "assign" and you're done.

  • Step 4
Now it's time to copy the Windows installation files from your .ISO format file to the USB drive. You will need WinRAR to open up the .ISO format file and copy all the Windows Installation files to the USB thumb drive.

  • Step 5

Plug the USB device into the USB port of the computer you are going to install the Windows operating system onto. Configure the computers Bios to boot from your USB thumb drive.

         Warnings! :
  • Make sure to remove the quotation marks when typing the listed commands in.
  • Be extra careful in selecting the right disk drive number from the drive list. You don't want to format the wrong drive and lose valuable files or photos.

  • Step 6
Shut down your computer and turn it back on. Press the key required to enter your BIOS or setup. This key is different on different computers. It may be the "del" key, "F10" or a different key. The screen will tell you which key to press.

  • Step 7
Locate the boot-sequence page of the BIOS setup. Each BIOS has its own setup pages, so the name for the page may be different. Sometimes it is called "boot," other times, "drive setup." Use the arrow keys to navigate through the different menus until you locate the boot-sequence page.
  • Step 8
Change the boot sequence so that USB device is listed first. On most computers, the sequence will start with the CD/DVD drive, then the hard drive, followed by other devices. Move "USB/Other devices" to the top of the list. Items can usually be moved around using the "+" key, but each BIOS has its own ways to move items on the list. Read the tips on the screen for information about how to move items on the list.

  • Step 9
Press "F10" to save your changes and exit BIOS. Once you exit, your computer will reboot. If you have a bootable USB device plugged in, your computer will boot from the USB device.

          Warnings! :
  • Not all BIOS systems are capable of booting from a USB device. If USB devices are not listed in Step 3, your system may not support USB booting.
  • Be careful changing settings in BIOS. Certain settings will make your computer unable to start.
